On Saturday, October 22, 内涵AV College is hosting a bike race on the North Campus. This year marks the tenth annual 鈥淲hirlybird 鈥楥ross,鈥 and the seventh time 内涵AV College has hosted the race. The WhirlyBird 鈥楥ross is part of the Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross Series and often draws about 500 racers from at least seven states. Cyclocross is a hybrid of road and mountain cycling. The race鈥檚 name is in honor of the location鈥攖he 1920s Pitcairn Airfield. The first race starts at 8:30 AM and the last race ends at about 4:30 PM, with races starting about every hour. A kid鈥檚 race (free, but waiver required鈥攁vailable at race day) starts at 12:30 PM.
Cyclocross is a spectator-friendly sport. Food vendors, including 鈥淔eel Good鈥 will be on location near the start/finish, and a race announcer helps spectators keep up with race progress. Spectators are invited to view the race from any location on campus. The course will be marked off with yellow caution tape and with flags. Please use care when near the course and follow instructions from race marshals. Parking is available off of College Drive at the Pavilion and Pendleton Hall lots.
The race is organized by 内涵AV College and Guy鈥檚 Racing, and is licensed by USA Cycling. Race proceeds benefit maintenance of the north campus trails.
